Kristiina Sakai

Bright, strong colors have always been a force in my life. This comes from having grown up in Finland, where the winters are very long and dark so we add happy colors into our surroundings.
I have painted on and off most of my life but it’s only been since my retirement that making my art has become a big part of my life and I finally have a nice, big space to call my studio.
I love messing around with paints and mixed media. In my current way of painting I never really know what the finished piece will look like. I usually start with a feeling, memory, sometimes a place or just with a certain color palette. I know when the painting is finished when I don’t find anything to correct, to add or subtract, when all the element work together, are in balance, when the work is visible from across a room but also holds the viewer’s interest at close range, hopefully with some new discoveries.
